pelvic ultrasound: An ultrasound to examine the pelvic area.

pelvis: The lower portion of the abdomen.

premature menopause: The end of menstruation and beginning of menopause at an unusually early age (before age 40).

progesterone: The female sex hormone that prepares the uterus to receive a fertilized egg and prevents the immune system from rejecting the fetus.

progestin: Any of a number of steroids that mimic the function of progesterone.

retrograde menstruation: When endometrial cells travel up the fallopian tubes instead of being flushed out of the uterus by menstrual flow.

retroverted uterus: A uterus that tips back into the pelvis instead of being positioned straight up and down.

salpingectomy: The surgical removal of a fallopian tube.

sterility: Permanent infertility.
